Karen...My sister in motherhood

Karen and I share so much in common. Mostly we share the fact that we are the only dominant estrogen holders in our households.

Karen, like me, is the mother of all boys.  She is one of the first people I met when I came to my kids' school.  You know how hard it is going to a new place where you don't know anyone?  Karen was a friendly face with a slight southern accent.  I love a southern accent.  It makes the world a little friendlier.

Her brood is made up on boys and a doting husband.

These boys remind me so much of my family.  So many different personalities and a mom to hold it all together.

Karen and Rich's oldest, Richard, is off to college for his first year at Duke.  Woo hoo!  Ahhhh, freshman year, I remember it well.  It was good, it was bad and it got ugly.  But I really valued that first time away from home.  I also failed a cross country skiing class, yep that was the bad part.  Breakups suck!

The other brothers, Will and Robbie are two peas in a pod.  The pod being Robbie.  He is seriously one of the nicest, kind-hearted middle children I have met.  A true peacemaker.

It's too bad when kids actually do grow up and leave and spread their wings....and fly.  My heart aches at the thought of them leaving.  I asked Karen how she was doing with it.  She said, as she was cleaning out drawers and things, "It's going great but sad at the same time."

I think growing up is bitter sweet.  I am so glad I was able to capture some moments with this dear family.  They are close to my heart because they are like my personal time machine I am peering into, in like 10 years.

Thank you dear Herbst family for spending some "quality time" with me capturing you at your finest.  That finest being just who you are, and being that together.

Good luck Richard at Duke.  I am sure no luck is needed and you will have the greatest time ever.  And then you will come home and realize how brilliant your parents really are.  It's o.k., I realized the same thing.  They are freakin' geniuses.
